LIS4708: Perspectives on Information Technology

LIS4708 is one of two capstone courses required to graduate from the College of Information at Florida State University. The objective of the course is to prepare our graduating seniors for entry into the career world. As part of their preparation, they build an Interactive Resume (IR) - a website built by the student, for the student and about the student. The purpose of the IR is many-fold; the student demonstrates that they can build an functional and effective IT system; the IR provides an easily-accessible location to provide coursework and IT Project samples that demonstrate competency and readiness for an IT career; the IR provides a vehicle for effectively marketing the student to potential employers; the IR forces the student to give serious thought to their goals and aspirations post-graduation and finally;the IR allows the College of Information to document the effectiveness of its IT program through work samples that demonstrate integrated learning across the IT curriculum. The work samples include an IT Project which is completed in LIS4910. I created this course in Summer 2006 and taught it through Fall 2006. The class is now taught by my colleagues Mia Lustria and Jane Barrager. Since I consider all CI students to be 'mine', I will continue to post the IRs of note ever semester.

Summer 2006

  • Jon Scott: Winner, Most Likely to Get the Interview. Jon has since gone on to our Graduate program and rides shotgun for me in LIS4941, IT Practicum. He is skilled in both Windows and Linux server administration, which makes him an invaluable asset to me in the feild as I have several installastions with mixed environments. He will be entering the job market after he graduates in Fall 2008 and I still have no doubth that he is "Most Likely to Get the Interview"!

Fall 2006

  • David Paul Lyons: This site has a very clever function that lets the user change the style sheet. It does a fine job of "showing without telling". David's design is simple and clean. David's IR includes a tutorial about Dreamweaver templates. David was the winner the Best IR competition- an award given by the vote of his classmates.
  • Matt Lundy: Matt's IR does a great job of showing what he knows. The Coursework section is particularly well done - it expands beyond a generic course description to discuss what value he received from each course. The documentation and presentation in this area are top-notch - I highly recommend you model your Coursework Area on Matt's page. Matt won the Best Blackboard Portfolio prize - however, due to the limitations of Blackboard, I have no effective way to provide a link to his excellent work.
  • Jonathan Ulven: Jonathan's site includes a tutorial that describes how to use a Linux terminal to forward your school email to an outside email client. I like the way he breaks up the page into small 'bites' of information. The color change on each page is a nice design touch.

Spring 2007

  • April Johnson: April is an outstanding person and her IR will show you some of the reasons why. Her home page shows her accepting the 2007 FSU Humanitarian of the Year award from FSU President T.K. Wetherall. April is an active member of the STARS Alliance, which works to improve the numbers of women and minorities in the computing professions. Unfortunately you cannot tell how much time and energy she invests in this project from her IR - hey April - GET BUSY! I have had the pleasure of working with April over the last year in her capacity as CI Help Desk technician and she is just a joyful person. So, while I don't feel her IR is all that it could be in terms of showcasing her amazing range of skills and abilities, I feature here here on TSWBWYS because she is one of the finest people I know and very worthy of a mention on this page!
  • Stephany Jones: Stephany's IR was the first to introduce the use of testimonials - this has been imitated many times by others - always the sincerest form of flattery! She won the prize for Best IR/Spring 2007 and it was well-deserved. Stephany does a great job of presenting herself and her work while at CI in a nice, bright package that really projects her warmth and passion for excellence. Stephany was my internat ITG for about a year and she was such a pleasure to have as a co-worker - always willing, even at the most inconvenient times.Stephany has moved onto a great web design job in Orlando and I am pretty certain that the IR helped her land it.
